Hi Amanda! I have found out and I had to watch the a special meeting over the internet yesterday but I find if I go, then at least if I need to interview someone or get a name spelling or w/e I can do it then and there. But I have a feeling the longer I'm there, the less I'll want to be a good little girl :p. Thanks for the tip though, I appreciate you sharing. Anyways, I started following you on tumblr! Let me know if you ever wanna hang out and share war stories (it's always nice to talk to people who don't think I'm making things up because it sounds so unrealistic). Thanks for the comment.

As a BH Weekly alumna (and not proud of it), an insider tip (in case you hadn't found out yet), city council meetings are broadcast in realtime on the web site... I realize not being physically present is a no-no in the journalism world, but if you put your tape recorder up to the speaker it works the same, and I found having a drink in sweats while trying to stay awake through it is much more enjoyable!

Marla:
Visiting your site for first time. We spoke briefly about a performance I told my client you wouldn't run, but he insisted, so I called.
I have two thoughts. First, reverse type on a black background is extremely difficult to read. You don't see it in newspapers. There are readability studies that show everything from eye flow on a page, to colors. You might want to try black on white. Or black on a very light background.
Second ... go sit at the beach or a quiet park and write down all the positives about you. No negatives. Fold the paper. Then pull it out when you need it ... as just a reminder of how great you are.
The beach or a park works when you want to get the anger out too. Or a good workout at the gym.
Remind yourself of your good qualities. You ARE competent or you wouldn't have accomplished the things you have ... or gotten this far. There are a lot of journalists out of work. You have something special.
And don't over think life. You can only control yourself, and what you do.
HUG HUG HUG HUG
Oh, and everyone has gone through or is going through what you are.
Keep the faith.

Very powerful and humbling. Here is the human condition of our time.
I have compassion for your struggle, your disappointment, your sadness.
I feel this, too.
It is hard to keep up your head when belittled. The work at hand is difficult enough- why do people have to employ humiliation and choke off the life force? Whatever happened to collegiality?
I admire that you have pep talked yourself to a positive attitude.
I don't know how to deal with people who put down others. Something is always awry with the power dynamic.
What are effective methods to turn around destructive criticism?
Keep up the good work. I will keep you in my thoughts tomorrow and wish you good karma.

Your education doesn't have to stop at a Bachelors degree; how about pursuing a Masters or a Doctorates, maybe even continuing on to be a professor someday...? I have a sister who is 34 years old, and she's been in college on and off from the age of 18 up until late last year. Some people love academia and all of the social perks, it doesn't have to end at graduation. Do what you enjoy doing, as long as you're making progress, that's what matters. :)
